Two years after launching a government lobbying company targeting the then NSW Liberal opposition, STW Group has a new venture, this time aimed at companies keen to open discussions with the Greens and other progressive political parties.
The new lobbying firm, Progressive Advisory, will be launched today by the former head of the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), Andrew Johnson.
Mr Johnson will advise business and not-for-profits on how to engage "the Greens and other forward-thinking MPs".
He will also offer advice on social responsibility and strategic planning.
A former chief executive of both ACOSS and the Australian Republican Movement, Mr Johnson has also been active in progressive politics here and overseas for many years.
"It's important for both the non-profit sector and business to understand the public sentiment on progressive politics, as well as -- when it comes to parliament -- getting themselves across what are the progressive issues that will take hold both inside and outside parliament," Mr Johnson said.
"With the Greens taking control of the Senate, that means that far more progressive issues are going to get air space and find support within parliament," he said.
Progressive Advisory says it is not politically aligned but argues that the increasing prominence of issues such as gay marriage are a sign of growing public support for issues that are left of centre.
"Contrary to popular belief, polling shows that there is quite a lot of support in the community for progressive issues across a range of policy areas and it's important to bring together parliament, the business community and NGOs around these issues" Mr Johnson said.
He said that the group would also have an extensive focus on helping business meet its corporate social responsibilities as well as helping not-for-profit organisations with strategic planning and building connections to the corporate world.
"Consumers are increasingly very clear about what they want to see businesses spend their philanthropic resources on.
"Part of what we will be doing is helping to ensure there is an interface between the charity sector and the business community, given that both groups are looking to each other to ensure their energies produce maximum benefit," Mr Johnson said.
The launch of the company completes the political lobbying circle for STW Group, which launched Liberal lobbyist firm Barton Deakin under the leadership of former NSW opposition leader Peter Collins in 2009 and also owns Labor specialist Hawker Britton Group.
